For trans and non-binary individuals seeking gender affirming medical care, the support of a mental health professional (via a letter) is often required by medical providers/insurance companies before someone is allowed to access care. It is very common for clinicians to refer out instead of writing this letter of support due to lack of training.

In this training, we will explore the legal and ethical aspects of writing letters of support for those seeking gender affirming care. Our goal: To increase the number of clinicians who feel comfortable and able to provide support for those seeking gender affirming care.

This training is 6 CEUs because we want you to walk out the (virtual) door with more than a letter template. We'll do a deep dive into the legal aspects of this work (we don't want unanswered legal concerns to be a barrier to you writing a letter!) and delve into the ethics of being in the position of writing letters in the first place! Throughout the day, you'll deepen your ability to critically look at our role as clinician-gatekeepers; consider the role of intersectionality in access to care; understand the history of WPATH and the medicalization of Gender Dysphoria through Western, Eurocentric standards of beauty and gender; and begin to address ableism in your letter writing practice. We'll also clear up some of the myths around gender affirming medical care for children/teens so you feel more confident supporting young people and/or their adult co-decision makers. Because we know that many situations are complex, we'll wrap up the day with discussion of affirming care in cases where significant substance use, mental health challenges, or other potential challenges are also present. Along the way we will share resources and have opportunities for connection in this learning community. We hope you'll join us!

Special thanks to the community organizations supporting our work:

Note: While we welcome all to view the recording, this training assumes a basic understanding of trans, non-binary and gender non-conforming identities. A basic understanding of medical transition options is helpful but not required.
