DESCRIPTION

Today's conventional health/mental health care is weight-centric, which strongly influences diagnosis, intervention, research and individual beliefs about health and mental health. There are problems in this approach to health and making a change in this focus on weight could be just what our healthcare system needs to allow more people to access the health they desire. In this panel a physician, dietitian and social worker will share from their expertise how an alternative approach to health called Health at Every Size is a means to having our healthcare be people-centric. Jennifer Lee, MSW will give an overview of Health at Every Size including information for making your office space accessible and other HAES tips and tricks. Dr. Lisa Erlanger will share about weight-bias and dangers of diet culture including what medical providers often are not taught about weight and health. Julie Church, RDN, CED-S, CD will share how Health at Every Size provides a necessary model for eating disorder treatment and prevention. Bring your questions, there will be ample time for Q and A.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify two ways a weight-centric approach to health leads to negative health outcomes.
  • Describe ways in which implicit weight bias and diet culture can manifest in social work practice.
  • Discuss the 5 HAES principles and identify how they apply to social work.
  • Identify one intervention to make your own space or practice more weight inclusive.
  • Access resources for further learning.
