Girls on the Spectrum: Diagnosis and Treatment Concerns

DESCRIPTION

Most social work and therapeutic professionals assume most people with autism spectrum disorder are men.  Unfortunately, this belief has led us to miss seeing the signs of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in girls and women. This CEU will help therapeutic professionals to identify the signs of ASD in women and girls.  You will learn why girls may be missed by therapeutic professionals and how it is our responsibility to be aware of the signs of ASD in all our clients. 

We will also discuss how presentations of autism may differ between women and men and how getting a late diagnosis of ASD affects girls and women. The unique needs of girls and women on the Autism Spectrum will be a focus throughout. The presenters of this CEU view autism as a neuro-difference that is important to be aware of, but also as a unique strength and source of community and support; we hope you will come away from the presentation with a greater awareness of recognizing neuro-diversity in women and girls.

PRESENTERS
Primary Instructor
Katherine Jo Glaves, MA, LMFT, CMHS, is a child and a family therapist. She has worked for the last 7 years with a caseload of mostly children and teens on the autism spectrum and their families, with special focus on girls on the autism spectrum. She holds an MA from Antioch University with an emphasis in Marriage and Family Therapy and Art Therapy and is a Child Mental Health Specialist. She is also an approved supervisor in Washington State. 

Secondary Instructor
Megan Wildhood is a writer, mental-health advocate and social worker in training. She has clinical experience in crisis and stabilization with adults from diverse backgrounds, including those with a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder, and has lived experience as a woman on the autism spectrum who was not diagnosed until adulthood.
